Introducing Indra: Liquid and Lightning Swaps

After Boltz suspended their services on August 3, 2026, AQUA lost the Lightning functionality that many users relied on. Boltz cited sustained attacks and the limited resources of its small team as reasons for shutting the service down. Over the years, Boltz has provided a reliable service to AQUA and much of the Lightning ecosystem, and we thank the team for their hard work.

This outage also made it clear that AQUA should not depend on a single provider. That’s why JAN3 built Indra.

Summoning Indra

Now in open-beta, Indra is JAN3's own custom swap infrastructure for moving Bitcoin between Lightning and Liquid. It’s not just a fork of Boltz.

Lightning sends will come first so you can pay Lightning invoices from your L-BTC balance. Later on, we will enable receiving (reverse swaps).

In addition to Indra, we will add additional Lightning swap providers as they are available (such as Blockstream Swaps) to ensure we have sufficient redundancy for Lightning swaps as we do for USDT swaps.

Built From the Ground Up

Indra is designed with the singular purpose of making Lightning work reliably inside AQUA, with Liquid as the substrate. Keeping the service focused on that flow reduces complexity, limits unnecessary dependencies, and gives us a smaller surface area to secure.

Indra was built from the ground up for AQUA’s Liquid-Lightning swap flow, where wallet UX, Lightning liquidity, Liquid transactions, fee policy, and security assumptions all meet. Getting that layer right is what makes Lightning feel natural inside AQUA.

Indra can be a drop-in replacement for Boltz as well because we’ve replicated Boltz API signatures. This also made it easier for us to integrate Indra into our existing app code.

How Lightning Works in AQUA

When interacting with Lightning from AQUA, your Sats move trustlessly across layers. You simply scan a Lightning invoice and pay it, or generate a Lightning invoice for receiving payments. Transactions happen atomically, which means they either complete successfully or are refunded. Indra never holds custody of funds. AQUA enables users to interact with the Lightning network without having to run a node, manage channels, or handle liquidity.

Faster Lightning Sends With 0-Conf

Indra takes its name from the Vedic god of lightning and rain who defeats Vritra, the serpent that trapped the world's waters and stopped them from flowing. When Indra slew Vritra, the waters were released and the rivers flowed again.

Indra was built to get the Sats flowing again, with secure custom infrastructure built from the ground up.
